Struggling With Religious OCD?

You're not alone. These fears are more common than you think.

Fear of committing the unpardonable sin
Intrusive blasphemous or sexual thoughts about God
Constant doubt about your salvation
Fear of God's punishment or going to hell
Excessive confession or reassurance-seeking
Repeating prayers until they feel "right"
Fear of being possessed or losing faith
Prayer feels like a trap, not a comfort

The Test:

"If your rituals feel more like a trap than a choice, OCD may be the cause — not your faith."

Why Religious OCD Is Often Missed

In Christian circles, scrupulosity symptoms are often confused with normal devotion — or dismissed as "just needing more faith." But intense religious practice driven by fear is very different from faith driven by love.

Others see: "Wow, they're so devoted — always praying, always at church"
You feel: Exhausted, trapped, and terrified you're never doing enough

Your pain is not a moral failing or lack of faith. It's a treatable condition — and we specialize in it.

Understanding Religious OCD & Scrupulosity

What Is Religious OCD?

Religious OCD, also known as Scrupulosity, is a subtype of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder where intrusive thoughts center on faith, morality, and one's relationship with God. Sufferers experience persistent, unwanted thoughts about committing sins, blasphemy, or losing their salvation — even when their behavior is completely moral. These aren't doubts that come from weak faith; they're symptoms of a treatable mental health condition.

Common Symptoms of Scrupulosity

People with religious OCD often experience fear of committing the unpardonable sin, intrusive blasphemous or sexual thoughts about God or religious figures, excessive confession or reassurance-seeking from pastors, constant doubt about whether prayers were "done right," fear of being possessed or losing one's faith, and compulsive behaviors like repeated prayer, scripture reading, or mental rituals to neutralize "bad" thoughts.

Why Christians Need Specialized Treatment

Many therapists don't understand religious OCD. Some dismiss faith concerns entirely, while others accidentally reinforce OCD by treating intrusive thoughts as genuine spiritual problems. Our Christian therapists understand the difference between OCD and authentic faith struggles. We use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) — the gold-standard treatment for OCD — while honoring your beliefs and never asking you to compromise your values.

Faith-Integrated ERP Therapy

ERP works by gradually exposing you to feared thoughts or situations while helping you resist compulsive responses. For religious OCD, this might include learning to tolerate uncertainty about salvation, resisting the urge to confess or seek reassurance, and recognizing that intrusive thoughts don't reflect your true character or faith. Our approach integrates Biblical truth — like understanding God's grace and the nature of intrusive thoughts — to support lasting recovery.

Religious OCD is highly treatable. With specialized care, most people experience significant relief within weeks.
